Pt. Nayan Ghosh (Sitar and Tabla)

Acclaimed as one of India's finest Sitar players, Pandit Nayan Ghosh today enjoys a forefront position having drawn the attention of serious musicians and connoisseurs across the world for his artistic brilliance, rich repertoire and a magnificence of tone. He is in fact considered an important reference source already for today's younger musicians.

He has proudly and responsibly inherited his concept of art and sense of aesthetics from his late father and Guru, the internationally renowned tabla maestro Padmabhushan Pandit Nikhil Ghosh. The legendary flautist Pannalal Ghosh was Nayan's elder uncle. In recent years, Nayan has been receiving guidance from the eminent sarod maestro Pt. Buddhadev Dasgupta. Nayan Ghosh's sitar recitals sparkle with intense melodiousness and rich aesthetic delineations, bringing out the depth and the true spirit of the raga. His judicious balance of the gayaki (vocalisation) and the tantrakari (instrumentation) elements reveal his unswerving focus on musical form and beauty.

Since 1974, Nayan's extensive concerts and lecture tours in the capital cities of Europe, U.K., U.S.A., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Vietnam, Philippines, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and Morocco besides at prestigious International Music Festivals, universities, radio and television throughout the world have won him rich accolades.

In May 1998, Nayan Ghosh received the Achievement Award from the Governor of California, Gray Davis in Los Angeles. Like his late father, who closely interacted with legends like Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington and Dave Brubeck, Nayan Ghosh too has experimented with Jazz figures like saxophonist Kidd Jordan and pianist Henry Butler of New Orleans, the renowned Japanese pianist Yosuke Yamashita and guitarist Kazumi Watanabe.

Primarily known in India as a formidable Tabla soloist, Nayan has shared the stage with stalwarts like Pandit Ravi Shankar, Ustad Vilayat Khan, Late Nikhil Banerjee, Shivkumar Sharma, Amjad Ali Khan, Salamat Ali Khan, Pandit Jasraj and a galaxy of eminent instrumentalists and vocalists.

He has to his credit besides CD recordings with well known labels worldwide, excellent coverages in leading international dailies like the New York Times, Frankfurter Allgemeine, Tribune de Geneve, Kansas City Times, the Sydney Morning Herald, Telegraph and the Times of India.

Presently, as Director of India’s leading music academy, the SANGIT MAHABHARATI in Juhu, Mumbai, Nayan is actively involved in his father’s monumental work, the ENCYCLOPAEDIA OF MUSIC IN INDIA which is soon to be published by the Oxford University Press, worldwide, besides imparting advanced training to numerous young aspiring musicians.
